The results of the local elections have brought a significant shift to the political landscape of Durham County Council, with Reform securing a majority with 65 councillors.
In light of these changes, I understand that many of you may have concerns about how these election results will impact your work, the services you provide and your future. I want to take a moment to address those concerns.
First and foremost, I want to assure you that UNISON Durham remains fully committed to defending the rights and interests of all our members. We will continue to monitor the developments closely and work tirelessly to ensure that your needs are not overlooked.
You may have heard recent comments from Nigel Farage, who suggested that workers involved in climate change efforts, diversity and inclusion initiatives, or those working from home should find “alternative careers very quickly”. These remarks are not only misguided but also dismissive of the important contributions of you and your colleagues. Whether working remotely or contributing to the goal of a net-zero economy, your work is valuable and essential to the functioning of County Durham and the economy.
The suggestion that workers in these areas should be displaced is an attack not only on your livelihood but also on the progress we’ve collectively made. Such remarks undermine the professionalism, expertise and dedication you bring to your job every day in a large variety of roles that serve the community of Durham.
Rest assured, UNISON will continue to fight for a future where job security, fairness and respect for all workers remain central to policy discussions. We will engage directly with the new Council leadership to ensure that your interests are prioritised.
In the meantime, we encourage you to contact UNISON if you have any concerns at all. If you know a colleague who is not yet a member of a trade union – encourage them to join UNISON.
Now, more than ever, is the time to stand together.
Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication to public service. Together, we will face any challenges ahead and continue to work toward building a fairer, more just society for all.
Yours in solidarity,
Ian Pritchard
UNISON Durham Branch Secretary
